Spot the difference:

Geir Haarde - new Prime Minister for Iceland (except that the Icelandic Prime Minister's office doesn't appear to have been told this yet.)
Keir Hardie - legendary founder hero of the British Labour Party.

Possibly cos he's not yet PM.
And he's half Norwegian. It's all a plot, I tell you! Norwegian Mafia!

OK, so I'm jumping the gun slightly on his accession. But Halldór Ásgrímsson is still listed, whereas there's actually an interregnum.

Er. No.
Halldór has announce he will resign. The handover will be seamless. (Unless the coalition blows up in the meantime)

Hah. He's only said he's going to go?

Hmph, so the various news reports are all assuming an honest politician who fulfills his promises?

In the next few weeks, yes. He's quitting as chairman of the party as well, can't actually remember if he's going to quit parliament immediately or wait for the elections next year.
If he doesn't quit, it's fairly safe to say that the coalition *will* blow.

Is it possible that Hardie could have been an anglicisation of Haarde at some point in the past, and they are in fact distantly related?

Possibly. Many generations back, I'd guess, but possibly. Hardie came from Lanarkshire, which is linguistically closer to Norway than, say, Oxford or London are.
