Subject: Oh, Oxford. Why, why, why?
Security: Public
Yesterday (Saturday), I went over to Oxford.

I was going for a meeting, over at the Oxford Hotel (a little in from Peartree) at 13:30, but we wanted to have some discussions over lunch, so I wanted to be there by 12:30. As it happened, leaving Royston at 11:10 was going to be a bit late, but the drive was pretty quick — Stokenchurch at the hour point — and coming in to Oxford on the A40 at 13:20, I reckoned it wouldn't take long to pop round the ring road.

That was the point that the sheer inadequacies of Radio Oxford's traffic reports became apparent.

There are traffic works at the entrance to the Thornhills Park&Ride. The backlog from these roadworks was a 2-lane traffic queue stretching for a couple of miles, and stationary. We sat there, 5 minutes at a stretch. Then, we'd all move a quarter mile, and stop again. The whole thing took 45 minutes to cover.

Did Radio Oxford bother mentioning this, on their traffic reports?

No. "Everything is moving normally"

Obviously, taking an extra 45 minutes to go anywhere on the major road that passes through their city wasn't worth mentioning. I could have saved a good half hour if I'd known. Just pop up to the next junction on the M40, and come in down the Bicester Road.

Normal for Oxford that is. Areas of the ring road are well known black spots. There are some places where you can rat-run away from it, but mostly once there you are stuck. My experience of living there is that one of the worst jam-spots is the section between the Banbury Road & Woodstock Road roundabouts on the northern leg, which you'd have come straight into from Bicester.

Mind you, a Sunday *should* have been relatively quiet.

I'd not even got to the ring road *sob*.

As far as hitting nasty traffic was concerned, it'd have been down the Bicester road till Peartree, then down past the P&R to the next roundabout. It wasn't like I was trying to get to the Randolph!

EDIT: indicated that it was Saturday - I'd not noticed the actual timing of the post was just after midnight.
