On Saturday night, I did something I've not done since 1981. I slept in college.

My goodness, the rooms are much nicer than they were in my day.

And I did wonder: what would a tourist pay for a room in the heart of Cambridge, facing out across a narrow lane at Queens' College, with King's College also visible? I suspect it would be a lot more than the £27 per night B&B (and that being a hot breakfast) that I paid per single room.

(Conceded - the views are not of the pretty aspects of either college. But for location, unbeatable.)

The general public has some ability to book college rooms for B&B - http://www.cambridgerooms.co.uk/

That's very good: I'm paying my alma mater £37 a night next week, and reckon that's a good deal, having poked around at the "available to the general public" alternatives.

Now if only Catz had some double rooms. Still, £54 for two people in adjacent rooms is pretty good (though it appears that bellinghwoman may actually be unable to sleep without my snoring).

I think my inability to stay asleep had more to do with being in unfamiliar surroundings and in a single bed - a situation not helped by having an alarm clock on the bedside table whose display light was bright enough to read by - solved by covering it with a towel. I was also scared that the books by Katie Price and Stephanie Meyers that I noticed on the bookshelf would stir, zombie-like, in the middle of the night and eat my brain.

We do like a dark bedroom, don't we? The bedside alarm, when its light is on low, is too bright for me.
