Inspired by a tweet by liasbluestone, I've just been browsing to see who went to the same college as me. And then I started wandering down Wikipedia's list of alumni to see what interesting first names there were (especially from past generations), remembering la_marquise_de_'s recent post on names in fantasy.

Morien.
Ofspring.
Kevin. Oh ok, the antithesis of an interesting name (though High Lord Kevin is an actual fantasy character), but a contemporary of mine who died a few years ago.
Somtow.

Hmm, that is an unusual name, but one I recognise. Wait a moment, that's Somtow Sucharitkul, currently trading as S P Somtow. That's one of those wonderfully exotic names - but because I first encountered him in the pages of US SF magazine Asimov's, I always assumed he was a Thai/American writer. I'd never thought him associated with this country, let alone going to the same college as me.

My Alumni are a pretty poor lot.

Alexander Fleming

H G Wells.
Huxley (Thomas Henry, not Aldous :-)

But we can move onto

Roger Bannister
Simon Singh
Brian May
and , a new one for me,

Declan Curry :-)

ICL?

(I note that the University of Westminster seems to have dibs on Fleming as well.)

Not too bad, though ICL does have about 20 times as many undergraduates. However, it has had a much shorter period to build its list, so it's not doing too badly.

(We got an Oliver Cromwell. But not the Oliver Cromwell.)

We probably own the University of Westminster.

But no, Wikipedia tells me he went to both: Royal Polytechnic Institution, and St Mary's Teaching hospital.

Somtow is Thai-American, despite having been to Cambridge, where he was an early member of CUSFS.

The most famous alumnus of my college, by some margin, is Nick Clegg.

Yeah, I know he's Thai-American. It's that my mental model of such a beast doesn't include Eton and Cambridge!

In case anyone was wondering, I got an alumni magazine from Lancaster this morning, which among other, less interesting things, told me that James May graduated in the same year as me.

Such is the excitement of my daily life that I thought this was worthy of comment.
