Subject: Confusing street names
Security: Public
I've just looked at the map of Carpenterstown in Dublin.

Apparently the locals get a little confused as to which street is which. I don't know why - it's not as though anyone would have difficulty remembering the difference between Riverwood Road, Riverwood Court, Riverwood Copse, Riverwood Dene, Riverwood Chase, Riverwood Glebe, Riverwood Glen, Riverwood Drive, Riverwood Grove, Riverwood Park, Riverwood Gardens, Riverwood View, Riverwood Lawn, Riverwood Way, Riverwood Heath, Riverwood Crescent, Riverwood Place, Riverwood Dale and Riverwood Vale, and Riverwood Green.

Now, if one of those had been Riverworld instead, I could have understood.

I have been known to accidentally finish my address as 'Drive' instead of 'Grove'

And I LIVE there.

Riverworld would have been at least more interesting.

I shall regard it as part of the standard Celtic 'confuse the Saxons' tactics then.

Is Cambridge much better? I mean, in Cherry Hinton you can get lost looking for "that exotic animal" amongst Gazelle Wy, Caribou Wy, Dolphin Cl, Eland Wy, Imapala Dr, Mandrill Cl, The Lynx, Lemur Dr, Fennec Close, Tamarin Gdns, Panther Wy, Buffalo Wy, Loris Ct ...

At least they're all different exotic animals as well as different street types. They're not even all primates or anything. I've nothing against themed streets - having lived on one of the Romsey 'colony roads' for some years, it was useful to be able to remember the order of the streets as being the placement of the original places on a spiral around the globe.

But trying to find someone when you're not entirely sure whether they live on Longfoobarname Vale or Longfoobarname Dale?

As has already been intimated, it's all part of a Celtic plot to confuse the Saxons, and as your LJname indicates, you're an obvious member of that plot.

I have just looked at the map... someone has gone "all streets in this chunk shall be called [foo]" - there's cherry and bramley and sycamore and maple and and... shows a severe lack of imagination on the part of the planners.

My mother lives in Silverstone village. For some reasons, racing drivers are the theme on her little estate.

She lives on a slope.

They named it Graham Hill.

I present you with Graan voor Visch in Hoofddorp in the Netherlands.

No, Graan voor Visch isn't the streetname, it's the name for the entire neighbourhood. After that, it's house numbers in sshhh-format (street/house).

I've always imagined people finding their way there:
A: Where do we need to be?

B: Graan voor Visch 18205.

A: Great, we're at number 1...

And 'Graan voor Visch' means 'at the end of the runway'?

Oh, it's not _that_ bad, surely? The runways are all aimed just around Hoofddorp. Or at least the bulk of it. Well, none of 'em line up with Graan voor Visch. Directly.

(Graan voor Visch = grain for fish. Or possibly grain before fish. There may be a deep joke there, as the Haarlemmermeerpolder where Schiphol and Hoofddorp and all that stuff now are, presumably including waving fields of grain, used to be the Haarlemmermeer. A lake, with fish, and boats, and terrible storms that'd threaten the lake to break its banks and invade nearby Haarlem & Amsterdam.)
