The ID card scheme has so far cost £250M.

15,000 cards have been issued.

The scheme is now to be scrapped.

It would have cost less to issue those people cars instead.

(Average price for a new car in 2008 was £14K . Cost per card was nearly £17K.)

I'm not sure right now. (Mine doesn't expire till 2014 because I was trying to avoid the stuff that was coming in in late 2004, and renewed early.)

I suspect that nothing's changing on that front, because it was much more driven by the US border control people and various bilateral international agreements.

The passport service had a notice on their website a few days ago that essentially said 'watch this space.' That's now been removed and the announcements about identity cards only is up there. I'm still watching the space.

FWIW: British passports are about to be upgraded to a new international security standard but additional proposals to put more biometric information on in the future have also been axed.
