The ID card scheme has so far cost £250M.

15,000 cards have been issued.

The scheme is now to be scrapped.

It would have cost less to issue those people cars instead.

(Average price for a new car in 2008 was £14K . Cost per card was nearly £17K.)

And the people who got one can't really sell it as a collector's item.

Will they stil be considered valid proof of identity, though?

If someone was to present one for my inspection, I wouldn't be able to tell whether it was genuine or not, since I'd never have seen one before. c.f. retailers in Southern England being reluctant to accept Scottish bank notes - it's really difficult to actually be sure of something you've never seen before.
