How should one behave on encountering a fictional character? I only ask because I bumped into the spitting image of Torchwood's Gwen Cooper last night, while shopping in Tesco.

That she was wearing high-visibility vest over a police uniform, and departed in a jam sandwich, only made the resemblance more startling.

I don't know what the etiquette is, but we should figure something out. :) Author Michael Connelly met his main character, LAPD detective Harry Bosch, at a book signing once. The guy was actually a LAPD cop, too. Connelly looked up to say hi and get the guy's name, and instead said, "My God! You--"

And the guy said, "I know. I'm Harry," and shook his hand. :)

I think PTerry has managed to carry it off best: there's a fan of his known as Pam Gower, who is now his Granny Weatherwax. And then of course there's Stephen Briggs Esq., a sculpture of whom in the guise of Lord Vetinari currently adorns my desk.

(Briggs was, somewhat amusingly, the first man that bellinghwoman saw naked after she married me. He was playing Brian in an Am-Dram production of Life of Brian, and he did the window scene.)

"The first" implies there's more than one ;-)

It also implies that she saw Briggs naked before bellingham himself...

We were married at noon. This incident occurred in the early evening. We didn't get home till quite late.

So yes, your inference was quite correct.
