I'm more inclined to think the writer has a tendency to produce the same kind of typos that I do: namely, the SoundEx one, where the correct word comes out of the brain, but subconscious vocalisation means that the fingers pick the wrong spelling.

(I am quite capable of picking completely the wrong homophone, and only spotting the mistake when scanning what I've typed.)
