I see that a certain motorway service station has won the 2009 British Academy of Gastronomes' Grand Prix.

Those who know anything about motorway food in this country might be surprised. On the other hand, those who have visited the place in question will not be surprised at all, as Tebay Service Station is vastly better than any other such establishment anywhere else on this island.

It also has a totally dangerous shop, being one of only two places I've ever encountered Stinking Bishop.

ETA: Dangerous to my wallet, that is.

I was not at all impressed with the quality of the food at the restaurant at Tebay on my last visit. Nothing was fresh, all they had were re-heated ready meals and cold oven ready chips.

The shop on the other hand is very good.

Good grief, I wonder what went wrong that day.

(I'm happy that I've not visited on such a day.)

You do know there are two service stations at Tebay? There's the one(s) just up the start of the Shap with the cutesy-pie shop and the ducks and crap parking facilities for anything bigger than a Dinky toy, and then there are the real Tebay services at the bottom of the hill, take the Brougham exit, go over the sheep grid, turn left at the roundabout and left again, can't miss it since the car park is full of 18-wheeler wagons and there's a 24-hour repair shop that can straighten out a tipped tanker while you wait. You can get pie and chips or double-pie and double chips, twice if you want it and nobody will look at you funny. The coffee comes in buckets and free refills, tastes dreadful and is just what you need at three in the morning and another three hours to the Tesco disributor in Glasgow, all of it uphill with an overloaded trailer full of baked beans and own-brand cornflakes behind you.

I like (the real) Tebay services, not for the food but for the ambience. No screaming kids for starters. No ducks either.

Really? That does surprise me - the food there is amazing, to the extent that my mother in law not only expects us to stop there on her way to visit her, but plans her own driving trips south to coincide with a meal at Tebay (she's an hour and a half away, so it's also a good time to call her when about to leave there).
