The supply problem is killing them, though having to redesign the wing box didn't help. The first six 787s are going to be heavier, thanks to the reinforcements they're adding to the wing box, they'll be sold at a discount.

This, BTW, is par for the course -- I can't think of a single airliner since 1960 that didn't have the first few models come in a few hundred pounds heavier than specified. CAD and modeling are all very well and good, but the forces on an airlines are many and complex, so it's in real-world testing that you find out where the rest of the weak points are.

Also true in Formula 1. Coulthard lost his front suspension recently because the glue wasn't strong enough. Possibly twice, I forget. It wasn't until they actually ran the car over a few kerbs etc that they could tell.
