This is the first in a fantasy by the author of the Alex Rider books. Sadly, I don't think I'd have enjoyed it even when I was the age at which it is targetted. I found the protagonist (a young proto yob, beginning the road to major crime) not very engaging, and if I didn't go for him, what hope did the rest of the story have? Indeed, given the classic 'small village horror' style of that rest, none really - as someone who came from a small village, I've never liked that sub genre very much.

I sha'n't be bothering with the rest of the series.
