Um... odd... I swear I also heard a report on the radio earlier about a woman who was the only entrant in a cake category at a show/fete who came second because the judges didn't think it was good enough for first. Was that the same thing, or is the world getting even dafter?

Not quite - the second place went to Jenny Brown, whereas it was Julie Dent (an organiser but not apparently one of the judges) who got the third place.

Some competitions won't give any awards if there isn't a contest. I seem to recall that for many years, there would be no Academy Award for animated features, because it was felt that a lone entrant winning would be bad for credibility.

It is indeed the same story.

The quote is from the end of the website report on that story, remembering a previous instance (11 years previous) when judges didn't think the entry deserved even second place.
