This book is a collection of Mikes's observations from journeying in South America. As an experienced traveller outside his homeland (and as one who was living in a foreign country anyway), he was practised in observing the foibles of a place and extracting some essence of its character. Here, he took on Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Colombia and Venezuela. I can't vouch for the accuracy, never having been south of the equator, and in some senses it feels a bit more cursory than did Switzerland for Beginners, but that's probably inevitable when taking in a whole continent.

Mikes does South America.
