Following on from Agatha Heterodyne and the Circus of Dreams, Agatha is still with the Circus, travelling between towns, and the Baron still thinks her dead. But sometimes, travelling in the wilderness can be dangerous, and even whole towns can be lost.

Also, both Agatha and the Circus still have secrets from each other, for example, the Clockwork Princess of the title. It's this Clockwork Princess that is the the cause of the major problem, when the troupe passes through a town and its ruler decides to take it.

In this volume, the plot starts to recomplicate, and new factions appear. In the next volume, Agatha is going to have a wretched time, as some who are supposed to be dead just won't stay dead.

The fifth volume, and the story is beginning to accelerate.
