When making name badges, make sure your badge typeface uses the same character set as your membership database. Look for at least one name in your database that has unusual characters such as Siân, and make sure it's not coming out looking like Sifn. It's easy to forget to do this at a British or American based convention, since most of your names won't show the problem.

ETA: Note - this is a mistake I have also made. The first run of Discworld 2010 name badges included a handful with really odd characters in.

Well, these people who insist on weird accents over vowels!

This post shouldn't specifically be taken as a criticism of NewCon, by the way - see the edit.

Will you be attending Illustrious? Because if you are, I shall have to make sure I do one gratuitously wrong name badge for you.

Or people who have weird definitions of "vowel" over which they want to put accents. Did you know you can't write Welsh in ISO 8859-1?

I wasn't aware, no. But Welsh is much of a minority language, even among those with an approximately Latin orthography, and I'm not surprised if the Nordic accents, or the Slavic or Balkan ones, have got in first.

I suspected as much. I think about our only chance to catch up with you next year would be to hike up to Edinburgh one weekend. We're doing Novacon this year, but that'll have been the only time we've gone.

Heh... when I had Beeblebug entering Membership data for DWCon into various forms I not to worry about the "weird" ones and just use the default alphabet... he insisted on looking up the correct codes and using them. The boy is a geek. This should not come as a surprise to anyone. He has recently built his own PC, with only minimal help and advice from us (I think he got a great deal of help from #afp, though) :)

Yarp!

The fun occurs when the correct characters are being used, but for a different character set. I can now look at a printed sign and go - "Oops, they're using UTF-8 text when it expects ISO 8859-1".

One solution to this is to spontaneously decide to attend only the night before and then decorate your own badge ;)

doesn't have to be spontaneous, of course - just unknown to the badge makers.

Pretty much our first convention as a couple - Octocon 1995 - we flew over to Dublin without having informed anyone. It didn't stop sacristan on the registration desk recognising us, even though he was completely unknown to us at the time, but there was no pre-made badge.

Tell me about it.
EVERY BLOODY TIME I downloaded the DWCON 2010 membership database I had to go through it and fix up the same dozen or so entries.

We'll need that fixed before next time.

(There's less and less excuse not to be Unicode these days.)
