Dear Pope Benedict, or may I call you Benny?

I note that your Vatican has declared it gravely sinful for a woman to be ordained.

I must congratulate you for following Christ's example in this, for as your church points out, he chose no women among his disciples.

I would, however, urge you to follow his teachings more closely. As you will also be aware, his choice was much more tightly circumscribed - he chose only practising Jews as his disciples.

I therefore urge you to declare that ordination of anyone who is not a practising Jew as a priest in the Roman Catholic church should also be noted as a grave crime against canon law, and any such should be expelled from the priesthood immediately.

Hello?

Benny, are you still there?

This week's grouping of female ordination in with sexual abuse of children as a crime is rather breathtaking.

If it were a matter of the Commandments (honouring false gods, for example), then perhaps. If it were something that Christ had actually spoken on, OK. If it were an obvious crime such as assault, yes. But the whole 'Christ didn't do this, so it must be wrong' attitude is deeply silly. I'm pretty sure he never drove a car. Or watched TV. Or spoke English.

But I'm an atheist, so perhaps I've missed something.

well, I come from a sub-sect of Chosen People* who, when considering hiring a lesbian rabbi, the main concern was if she'd take the pay cut to come work with us**, so my take on female ordination and the Church leadership in general is pretty much "WTF are you so skeered of?"

* as the joke goes, "dear god, could you choose someone else for a while?"

** the synagogue treasury was a bit strapped, at that time.

I am very happy that the current bishop of Stockholm (Church of Sweden, admittedly) and her wife are not being noticeably harrased by the priesthood.

I've noted that the cooler climates do tend to be somewhat more rational about religion. I blame the summers in Rome. Clearly, someone has a heat rash that's making him irritable...

I'm happy to say that the sane part of the Anglican communion seems to concur.

My mother, both of whose brothers did missionary work (one getting expelled from post-partition India for his pains), is perfectly happy about having a female vicar in her parish, and I strongly suspect she'd be happy with a gay one too.

When it gets down to the African churches, then oh dearie, dearie, me.

As I understand it, being a priest and a woman is the canonical equivalent of being a child abuser. I understand the curia's detailed knowledge of the second, but the first?

Absolutely brilliant. And quite right.

Also, they must all live a 1st century AD lifestyle, compatible with conditions at that time. Being ruled by Rome is not enough.

Thank-you. Remind me which century are we in again? And how much of the human race is made up of my gender?
