Arriving at work this morning, I got to open my latest CDs.

Of course I wanted to play them.

The only problem I have is that although the CD player on my desk has a headphone socket, it's obviously designed to pump high power through traditional clamshell headphones. For in-ear plugs, it's difficult to get a sensible volume between 'off' and 'too loud'.

I'm looking for a convenient 10db attentuator with 3.5mm connectors for that sort of thing - I get this problem on aircraft too, the volume setting of 1 quantum above zero is a bit loud.

I bought a little 3.5mm inline volume control with short cables on either side in Radio Shack at some point for use on aircraft. Very useful.

Aha! Noone calls them 'attenuator', they are all called "inline volume control". The intergoogletubes have plenty of hits for that, thanks!
